Cambridge, MA --- Junior Emily Kuo's (Chicago, IL) first goal of the season, a penalty kick with nine minutes remaining in regulation, completed MIT's 2-1 come-from-behind win over Worcester State University in a non-conference women's soccer game on a rainy Tuesday night.

The Engineers' record improved to 2-1-0 on the season while the Lancers dropped to 0-2-1.
 
Worcester State controlled play from the opening whistle, nearly getting on the board after three minutes elapsed courtesy of third-year Brianne Beckman's (Lakeville, MA) corner kick that was ultimately punched out by MIT junior goalie Meghan Wright (Devon, PA). Beckman helped the Lancers break through in the eighth minute when she sent a pass from the far post back into the box which was redirected by freshman Alyssa Sawyer (W. Springfield, MA) to the inside corner of the goal.
 
The remainder of the half was played in the Engineers' backfield as the visitors' ended the frame with a 9-1 advantage in shots. A defensive miscue gave Worcester State an opportunity to increase its margin during the final minute. Following a scramble in front of the net, the ball made its way to Beckman whose shot from 20 yards out on the right wing was grabbed by Wright.
 
Coming out of the break, the Cardinal and Gray were the aggressors and it resulted in the equalizer in the 50th minute. Freshman Faith OBrian (Raleigh, NC) set up junior Andrea Park (Irvine, CA) who launched a shot from 40 yards out on the near side. The ball landed in front of an outstretched WSU senior keeper Angiezaka Sychtysz (Warren, MA), but she could reach it as it bounced into the back of the net.
 
MIT continued to press as it almost registered the go-ahead goal with 17 minutes left to play. OBrian sent a through ball straight down the middle of the field; however, the Engineers' attack was unable to corral it. Due to the slick conditions, the pass was dangerous enough to bring Sychtysz well off her line.
 
With just over nine minutes to go, freshman Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, CT) was taken down in the box while making a charge at net, resulting in Kuo's game-winning penalty kick.

Worcester State junior Nicole Wynne (Hanson, MA) and Kuo both put shots on goal down the stretch, but the goalies were up to the task.
 
Wright finished the night with seven saves while Sychtysz turned away three shots.
 
Both squads continue non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 10. MIT will travel to Salem State University while Worcester State will host Clark University at 11 AM.
