Morss Helps Women's Soccer End Skid With 2-1 Victory Over Clark

Worcester, MA --- Worcester State got the game-winning goal from sophomore Therese Morss (Marion, MA) in the 83rd minute, lifting the visiting Lancers to a 2-1 win over Clark University in non-league women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The win for Worcester State bumps its record to 2-2, while the Cougars now stand at 1-2-1.

Things started out slowly for both teams but the Lancers finally broke through with the second goal of the season from junior Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) off a feed from freshman Kara Rys (Ware, MA) at 29:19.

Worcester State held that 1-0 lead until the 63rd minute when Cougar freshman Alex Easton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) served in a corner kick that was poked past sophmore netminder Danielle Grunbaum (Marlboro, MA) by senior Hana Chamoun (Bala Cynwyd, PA) to even the score.

WSU looked as if they might take the lead in the 80th minute when junior Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, MA) launched a free kick that was on mark but freshman backstop Gabby Paolini (Potomac, MD) was able to leap and deflect the attempt over the crossbar.

The Lancers did move ahead moments later as Gonet setup Morss with the go-ahead marker at 82:12.

Clark had a shot at the equalizer in the 88th minute when junior Janelle Pasternack (North Brookfield, MA) cut across the top of the box and unleashed a blast that sailed just high over the crossbar.

Worcester State held a 16-14 edge on shots and both teams had six corners.

Grunbaum made three saves for the Lancers, while Paolini turned back five for Clark.

The Cougars will get back to action on Wednesday with a trip to Roger Williams, while Worcester State visits WPI on Tuesday.
