WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's soccer team opened its 2021 season at home with a 4-1 loss to Wheaton College Wednesday evening at John F. Coughlin Field.
With the loss, the Lancers fall to 0-1 on the season. The Lyons move to 1-0 with the win.
The Lyons started off the scoring of the night with a goal just five minutes into play when Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) put it in the back of the net off of a corner from Amanda Dunton (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Wheaton controlled the ball much of the first half but were unable to take any further of a lead.
Worcester State had a few opportunities, but were unable to capitalize. Until Hailey Skowronski (Douglas, Mass.) sent a shot over the head of Gabby Marcus (Charlotte, N.C.) to tie up the game for the Lancers before they headed to halftime.
The Lyons came out of the locker room strong and found the back of the net three times within three minutes at the beginning of the half. Troy, Jaime Rattenni (West Greenwich, R.I.), and Claire Donfield (New Providence, NJ) each found the net giving the Lyons the insurance they needed to overcome the Lancers.
Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) grabbed seven saves despite the loss. Gabby Marcus (Charlotte, N.C.) picked up three saves for the Lyons.
Worcester State will be back in action on Saturday when they play cross-town rival Clark University. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
