Lancers Stand Strong on Defense With Lone Goal Loss to Rams

Worcester, MA- With just their second game of the season the Worcester State Women's Soccer team (0-1, 0-0) journey's to Suffolk University in a bid to grab their opening win of the year. The Lancers opened up 2024 action just this past Wednesday, and aim to grab an early goal and victory in their trip east on the day.

Final

Worcester State:0

Suffolk: 1

How it Happened:

In a back and forth game between two strong teams the deciding factor was going to be which team managed to slip in the first goal and hold the other team off, which is exactly what happened in today's game as the Lancers looked to be the first on the scoreboard. The Rams were awarded the first corner kick of the game but failed to capitalize while the Lancers struck first on shot attempts, but again each team's defense was stifling. Each team worked the ball around the field but the score remained 0-0 at the end of the first half.

Suffolk would grab the needed single goal off a goal scored by Avery Porter just minutes into the new half off a set piece play that saw Suffolk send the shot just past sophomore Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA). Worcester's ball movement however throughout the game showed promise as they fired away at the Suffolk cage, but as to be expected between these two tight teams that lone goal was the deciding factor as Suffolk would hit the 90 minute mark with the 1-0 win.

Gumienny would end the day with six saves on the day while sophomore Sophia Chandler (Worcester, MA) led the Lancers with two shots and one on frame.

What's Next:

The Lancers (0-2, 0-0) are next in action on Tuesday as they continue their road journey with a trip to Eastern Connecticut at 4pm.
