Nichols 8, Worcester State 1
Worcester, MA --- Nichols College took five singles matches and all three doubles sets to defeat Worcester State this afternoon at Clark, 8-1. With the win the Bison remain unbeaten and improve to 10-0 which equals the best mark in program history. Nichols set the record of 10 last season.
It was a total team effort for the Bison as they used ten players to help record all eight of their wins. Jill McQuiggan (Weymouth, MA), Molly McGuire (E. Sandwich, MA), Chelsey Miller (Salem, CT) and Monica Bassi (Branford, CT) each recorded sweeps in the first, second, third and fourth singles, respectively. In doubles action Alex Cifone (Bristol, CT) teamed with Miller in the 8-5 first seed win while Chloe Carner (Norcross, GA) along with Cat Jaworski (Berlin, VT) won 8-5.
The lone victory for Worcester State was by Amy Mach (Springfield, MA) who recorded her first individual win of the season in fifth singles, 7-5 and 6-4.
There were two other close matches that ended in victories for Nichols. In sixth singles WSC Lauren Cain (Framingham, MA) took the first set against Erica Tolman (W. Rockport, ME), but Tolman closed out the match with 6-4 and 6-3 victories to clinch. In third doubles, Nicole Sellner (N. Attleboro, MA) and Danielle Lehman (Westminster, MA) brought Meg Woodruff (Morris, CT) and Erin Desmaris (Gardner, MA) to extra frames, 9-8, but the visitors won the final set 7-5.
Both teams will play again this Saturday. Worcester State (1-5) will play their next game at home as they host MCLA at 1 PM while Nichols heads to Anna Maria for a CCC contest at 10 AM.
