Women's Tennis Edges Out Becker, 5-4

Leicester, MA --- Trailing 2-1 after the doubles sets, Worcester State University captured four of the six singles matches to post a 5-4 victory over Becker College in non conference women's tennis action this afternoon.

With the win the Lancers improve to 3-1 while the Hawks slip to 4-2 overall. WSU avenged a 6-3 setback to Becker last season.

The Hawks started off the match with two solid triumphs in pairs play as senior Danielle Stryker (Ledyard, CT) and junior Shawna McNally (Worcester, MA/Bourne) rallied to beat their opponents 9-7 in first doubles while third-year Laura Mimms (Ashland, MA) and classmate Megan Nessen (Levittown, PA) won 8-2 in the second flight. Before round was over, however, freshman Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) and sophomore Mariah Tangney (W. Boylston, MA) and to cut into the lead with an 8-1 triumph at third doubles. 

The Blue and Gold would earn victories in singles play by senior Courteney Blais (Paxton, MA) as she won her second flight matchup 6-4 and 6-1 as Michanczyk was victorious at fifth singles 6-2 and 6-3 and sophomore Erin Desmarais (Gardner, MA) earned the sixth singles win, 6-1 and 6-3.

The Hawks posted points in first singles when Nessen won 6-1 and 6-2 and Stryker remained unbeaten at 6-0 on the season in the third seed as she swept her opponent 6-0 and 6-0.

With the match knotted at 4-4 both teams watched from the sidelines as Tagney defeated McNally 6-0 and 6-2 in fourth singles.

Both squads will entertain opponents on Thursday at 3:30. Worcester State continues Little East play at Clark's tennis courts when they host Salem State while Becker welcomes Anna Maria to the Leicester campus in a non conference Route 56 battle.
