Women's Tennis Ends Season with 5-4 Triumph over Wentworth

Worcester, MA --- Worcester State swept all three doubles matches and added victories in two singles matches to post a 5-4 win over Wentworth this afternoon in non conference women's tennis action. The Lancers end their season at 6-8, an improvement of two wins from a year ago, while the Leopards wrap up their 2010 campaign at 3-12.

The Blue and Gold were propelled by senior Courteney Blais (Paxton, MA) who teamed with classmate Ashley Perkins (Worcester, MA/Doherty) to earn a 8-3 win at first doubles while Blais also won at third singles, 6-0 and 6-2. Sophomore Marissa Boss (Holden, MA) paired with classmate Mariah Tangney (W. Boylston, MA) for the 8-2 win at second doubles as Boss was victorious at second singles with scores of 6-1 and 6-1.

Sophomore Jackie Shaw (Uxbridge, MA) and Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, MA) added an 8-2 triumph at third doubles for WSU.

Second-year Joanna Gustafson (Ashburnham, MA), freshman Debora Massaro (Stony Point, NY) and sophomore Jillian Flynn (Billerica, MA) all posted victories at first, fourth and fifth singles, respectively, while sophomore Sophie Boyce (S. Portland, ME) defeated Michanczyk in extra frames with a 6-4, 4-6 and 10-8 win as the sixth seed.

Blais made "Senior Day" a memorable one as she became the 16th Lancer to join the exclusive 25 point club. Entering today's contest, she was only two points away from the career milestone. This season, Blais posted a team-best 10-3 mark in singles play while she was 6-8 in doubles action. Blais scored a squad-best nine points in 2009.

Blais and Perkins were honored in a special pre-game ceremony for their respective contributions to the women's tennis team.
