Women's Tennis Handed 9-0 Setback By UMass Dartmouth

N. Dartmouth, MA --- UMass Dartmouth earned wins in all three doubles contests and each of its six singles match-ups to earn a 9-0 triumph over Worcester State this afternoon in Little East women's tennis action.

In pairs play for the Corsairs (7-0, 4-0 LEC) , junior Nicole Pellitier (Swansea, MA) teamed with classmate Casey Auman (N. Dartmouth, MA) for the 8-4 win at first doubles. In the second flight, third-year Alison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA) and classmate Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI) also added the 8-5 victory.

Third-doubles was a closely contested match for the Blue and Gold (4-5, 0-4 LEC), but junior teammates Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) and Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) dropped a 9-7 decision to sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA) and senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA).

Pellitier, Pollard and Auman each won their respective singles matchups by allowing two points or less in the first flight, the fourth seed and at sixth singles.

Schulze dispached sophomore Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT) by the scores, 6-1 and 6-3, at second singles while junior Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) was victorious, 6-4 and 6-2, over second-year Miranda Biron (Webster, MA) at fifth singles.

Michanczyk also worked hard to fight off Furtado at fourth singles, but she ultimately fell 7-6 (7-3) and 6-1.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 1. Worcester State heads south to Providence, RI to take on Johnson and Wales while UMass Dartmouth entertains Southern Maine.
