Women's Tennis Drops Season Opener To Wentworth

 

Cambridge, MA --- Wentworth swept doubles and took four singles match-ups to defeat Worcester State 7-2 in non-conference women's tennis action this afternoon.

With the win the Leopards move to 1-1 overall while the contest was the first match of the campaign for the Lancers.

Wentworth wins in singles action included senior Deborah Messaro (Stony Point, NY) at the first flight and sophomore Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, MA) as the second-seed in a close 7-5 and 6-4 matchup with freshman Shelby Jankins (N. Brookfield, MA).

Second-year Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, MA) and junior Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, NY) were also victorious for the Leopards at fourth and fifth singles, respectively.

Sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) earned the 6-1 and 6-4 win at third singles while classmate Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, MA) had to go to a third set to earn the 7-6, 2-6, 11-9 triumph.

In pairs play, McColgan and Ofer won their match-up at first doubles, and Messaro teamed with Corcoran to defeat senior Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) and teamate Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT), 8-6 at second doubles.

Graduate student Jillian Flynn (Billerica, MA) and sophomore Jessica Simms (Deep River, CT) won also won at third doubles for Wentworth.

Worcester State will compete again on Thursday against Newbury at 3:30. The Leopards head Lesley on Wednesday for a 7:30 match at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols.
