Women's Tennis Opens Little East Play With Victory  Over UMass-Boston

 

Dorchester, MA --- Senior classmates Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) and Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) along with junior Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT) and sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) all posted wins in their respective singles matchups to earn the 6-3 triumph over UMass-Boston this afternoon in Little East Conference action.

With the win the Lancers even out their record to 2-2 (1-0 LEC) while the Beacons falls to 1-4 (0-1 LEC).

Freshman Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA) and Shepard started off the match with the closely contest 9-8 (7-4) win at first singles to defeat fourth-year Samantha Counts and Nuha Montasser (Braintree, MA).

After UMB sophomore Solveig Castelli (Precjo, France) and senior Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA) dispatched Tomasetti and junior Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA), 8-4 as the second doubles seed, Michanczyk and Sarksi helped give the Blue and Gold the 2-1 edge with an 8-4 win at third doubles.

Muntasser and Kloczewiak helped the hosts regain the 3-2 lead in points, but Shepard won at third singles, 6-4 and 6-3, Michanczyk was victorious at fourth singles, 6-1 and 6-2, Tomasetti earned the 7-6 (7-3) and 6-4 win at fifth singles and Sarkis collected the match clincher at sixth singles, 6-2 and 6-3.

With her two victories today, Sarkis became the 18th Worcester State women's tennis player to join the 25-point club as she is now tied with current head coach Albana Xhemollari with 26 points.

Worcester State starts a three-game home stand starting with MCLA at 3:30 on Tuesday at Wachusett High School. UMass-Boston takes on Eastern Nazarene on Thursday at the same time.
