Women's Tennis Rolls Past MCLA for Third Straight Win

 

Holden, MA --- Junior Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA) and freshman Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA)  won their respective singles and doubles matchups to help lead Worcester State to a 9-0 win over MCLA this afternoon in non-conference women's tennis action at Wachusett High School.

With the triumph, the Lancers run their streak to three straight (3-2) while the Trailblazers fall to 1-5 in the defeat.

Candelieri, Jankins, junior Miranda Biron (Webster, MA), sophomore Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, MA), junior Page Hirons (Gardner, MA) and first-year Elise Mulready (Rockland, MA) all won their respective matches in solo play with straight-set wins.

In doubles action, Jankins and sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) won their second consecutive outing as the first seed to defeat senior Kelly Bryant (W. Springfield, MA) and sophomore Stephanie Giardina (Pittsfield, MA), 8-2.

Candelieri and classmate Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT) retired second-year Danielle Weineck and freshman Becky Waterhouse (Fairport, NY), 8-1, while senior teammates Brooke Michanczyk and Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) improved to 3-0 at third doubles on the campaign with an 8-0 win.

With her victory at third singles, Biron became the 19th WSU student-athlete to join the 25 point club. Biron has a solid 16-12 mark at singles in three-plus seasons as a Lancer and she led the squad in points during her rookie campaign (10).

Worcester State takes on defending Little East Champion Bridgewater State at Clark on Saturday at 12 PM while MCLA opens NAC play with Lyndon State at 1 PM at home.
