Donohue Propels Solid Distance, Throws at Worcester City Meet

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA) picked up where she left off from the indoor season and posted a first-place time of 41:05.94 in the 10,000 meter run to help lead the women's outdoor track and field team to a runner-up finish at the Worcester City Meet at Coughlin Stadium.

WPI won the meet with 210 point followed by the host Lancers (136), Fitchburg State (108), Assumption (66), Gordon (58) and Clark (7).

Donahue's time qualified for the DIII New England Outdoor Championships and she eclipsed the school mark that had been held by Erica Pierce (41:25.54) since 1995.

Freshman Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, ME) had second-place distances in the shot put (10.25 meters) and the discus (30.55m) while junior Maura Withington (W. Palm Beach, MA) and first-year Kristina Richard (Peabody, MA) placed first (13:00.8) and second (13:34.1), respectively, in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Sophomore Brittany Grueter (Foxboro, MA) timed second in the 5,000 (20:05.69) and third in the 800 (2:38.61) while rookie Alison Hickey (Easton, MA) posted a strong time of 2:31.92 for second place.

Second-year Kristen Brunelle (Dracut, MA) tossed third in the discus (30.05m) as senior Christina Bisbee (N. Attleboro, MA) added sixth in the hammer (36.45).

Earlier on Friday at Holy Cross, junior Kayle McElroy (Rutland, MA) and sophomore Nicole Hanson (N. Dighton, MA) placed fifth (28.84m) and sixth (28.59m) in the javelin, respectively.

Next week the Lancers will compete at the Jim Sheehan Invitational at Fitchburg State.
