MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Worcester State University men's and women's outdoor track & field teams competed in their final regular season meet of the season Saturday at the Elmer Swanson Classic hosted by Wesleyan University.
Despite no team scoring at the meet, a handful of Lancers turned in first place finishes at the meet, led by Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) and Eddy Acuna (Newton, Mass.), who each won two events. Mensah won both the triple jump (10.55 meters) and long jump (5.06 meters), while Acuna won the shot put (14.82 meters) and the discus throw (44.13 meters).
Junior Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.), won the 100 meter dash Saturday with a time of 12.78 seconds, while senior Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) won the 1,500 meter run at 4:57.36. Junior Kendra Wynn (Chelmsford, Mass.) was the winner of the 5,000 meter run with a time of 20:27.39, and hurdlers Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.) and Emily Finnegan (Ashland, Mass.) won the 100 meter hurdles (17.55 seconds) and 400 meter hurdles (1:12.61) respectively.
Throwers Carina Frontiero (Ipswich, Mass.) and Riley Sanderson (Leominster, Mass.) both came out on top in their respective events, with Frontiero winning the shot put (10.04 meters) and Sanderson winning the javelin (29.44 meters).
On the men's side, four additional field athletes won events on top of Acuna's pair of victories. Senior Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) won the hammer throw at 53.79 meters, freshman Dariel Canela (Peabody, Mass.) won the javelin throw at 45.00 meters, senior Ryan Connolly (Braintree, Mass.) won the high jump at 1.95 meters, and senior Markiesh Harmon (Leominster, Mass.) won the triple jump at 12.78 meters.
Over on the track, sophomore Abdulrazak Frederick (Shrewsbury, Mass.) won the 110 meter hurdles at 15.92 seconds. Freshman Masato Terajima (Holden, Mass.) looked sharp with a win in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:35.04, and senior Christian Vera (Worcester, Mass.) rounded out Worcester State's victories with a winning time of 18:01.96 in the 5,000 meter run.
The Lancers will be back in action next Saturday when they compete in the MASCAC Championships, hosted this year at Fitchburg State University.
