FITCHBURG, Mass. – Worcester State boasted individual winners in three events on Saturday afternoon in another strong team performance at the Jim Sheehan Invitational, hosted by Fitchburg State University.
Caitlin Conneely (Tewksbury, Mass.) topped the field and beat her PR by 15 seconds in the 5,000 meters, running the event in 20:26.83.
For the second week in a row, Riley Sanderson (Leominster, Mass.) won the women's javelin. Sanderson's throw of 34.10m was the best of the 17-athlete field, including teammate Arianna Constant (Leominster, Mass.), who placed third in the event with a throw of 31.8m.
Junior Heather Turner (Ashland, Mass.) was the champion of the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.70.
In addition to the three wins, the Lancers had several top-three finishes. Maureen Grady (Douglas, Mass.) was second in the long jump (4.9m) and Eryca Lopes (Ayer, Mass.) was third in the triple jump (9.26m).
Kasey Clark (Dudley, Mass.) finished the women's 800 meters in 2:35.10, good for third place in that event, while Elena Pellegrini (Ashland, Mass.) went third in the 200-meter dash (27.18) and fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.33).
Just behind Pellegrini was Bridget Maunsell (West Boylston, Mass.) with a fifth-place showing in the 100 (13.36 seconds), while Lopes was tenth in 14.02.
Sthanisha Moreau (Taunton, Mass.) took 9th in the shot put (10.07m) and 20th in the discus (19.41m).
Worcester State is back in action on Friday, April 22nd when they head to Dedham, Mass. For the Jay Carisella Coaches Invitational.
