WNEC Shuts Down Worcester State, 3-0

Worcester, MA --- Western New England College seniors Rachel Cervone (W. Springfield, MA) and junior Samantha Shorno (Glen Gardner, MA) each notched nine kills apiece to help propel the Golden Bears to a 3-0 victory this evening over Worcester State at the Lancer Gymnasium.

With the win WNEC (9-6) won in three straight sets 25-15, 25-15 and 25-20.  

Junior Lauren Landri (New Cannan, CT) played well in the front court as she registered a team-best 10 kills while she also combined with senior Christina Longto (Kingston, NY) for five blocks. Third-year Marci Egbert (Wayne, NJ) came up big with some saves for the Golden Bears as she notched a match-best 20 digs. Shorno also ended the evening with two service aces.

Worcester State (4-8) was paced by senior Lauren Saylor (Swansea, MA) who came close to double figures as she finished with 11 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Brittany Stoddard (Orange, MA) handed out 18 assists while classmate Joanne Grenier (Orange, MA) put up 13 digs.

Saylor, who entered the evening with 983 kills, is now just six away from 1000 in her career.

Worcester State opens up MASCAC play in a tri-match as they will travel up to North Adams, MA for a 2 PM match against Mass Maritime and a 4 PM contest against MCLA. WNEC takes a break and will entertain Sage College next Tuesday before they host Newbury on Thursday. Both contests are slated for a 7 PM start.
