Volleyball Goes 2-2 at BSC Halloween Classic

Bridgewater, MA --- Worcester State went 2-2 at the BSC Halloween Classic on Friday evening-Saturday afternoon as they opened with a 3-0 victory over Mass Maritime and a 3-2 triumph over Framingham State before they fell in consecutive matches Bridgewater State (3-0) and Plymouth State (3-0) on Saturday. Senior co-captain Lauren Saylor (Swansea, MA) was selected to the All-Tournament team.

The tournament was a warm-up for the MASCAC Conference Championships next Saturday, which will be at top-seeded Westfield State. The third-seeded Worcester State (14-17) takes on #2 Bridgewater State in the semifinals.

In their opening match against the Buccaneers the Lancers won in three straight sets, 25-6, 25-14 and 25-17. Worcester State is now 3-0 against Mass Maritime this year.

They were paced by junior Brittney Ledoux (Nashua, NH)'s game-best 5 kills while sophomore teamates Juliana Tyo (Pepperell, MA) and Joanne Grenier (Orange, MA) combined for eight kills. Second-year Katey Figella (Feeding Hills, MA) had three solo blocks while Tyo also had two solos rejections as well. Freshman Jodi Hallett (Gill, MA) handed out 16 assists while junior Michelle Maass (Halifax, MA) added seven digs.

Worcester State took two of the first three sets (20-25, 25-20, 25-16) in Friday's night cap before Framingham evened up the series with a 25-18 win in the fourth set. WSC then took the decisive set, 15-8, to earn the victory. WSC is now 2-0 against the Rams this season.

Saylor posted her sixth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 14 digs while Tyo remained hot as she spiked six kills with seven block assists. Sophomore Brittany Stoddard (Orange, MA) dished out 33 assists with three aces while Maass and Grenier combined for 16 digs.

The Lancers had 18 block assists as they were led by nine from Figella.

In their morning match-up against Bridgewater State, the Lancers fell in three consecutive matches 25-14, 25-21 and 25-16. WSC is 0-2 against BSC this season.

Saylor paced the effort as she had 10 kills while Stoddard added 17 assists. Grenier and Maass each tallied eight and seven digs, respectively, for the Blue and Gold.

In the final setback to the Panthers, Worcester State dropped all three matches, 25-22, 25-10 and 25-16.

Saylor notched five kills while Stoddard registered five aces. Grenier put up 11 digs as Stoddard finished with 12 assists.
