Four Student-Athletes Claim All-MASCAC Women's Volleyball Accolades

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Underscored by first-team selection senior Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA), four Worcester State women's volleyball players have been selected to the All-MASCAC team as selected by the leagues seven head coaches in a vote last week as announced by conference publicist Jim Seavey.

Junior Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) along with sophomore teammates Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) and Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) also received second-team recognition.

Lebel wraps up her Lancer career with her second consecutive first-team nod and she also was honored on the second-team as the lone freshman in 2009.

As a middle blocker, Lebel finished the regular season third in the MASCAC in hitting percentage (.307) as she was eighth in total kills (215) and average kills per set (2.22). She was also first on her team in solo blocks (14), block assists (25) and total blocks (41).

For her career, Lebel tallied 628 kills and 496 digs – totals that are third and seventh place all-time, respectively. Accurate statistics for women's volleyball were first kept starting in the 2003 season.

Jasper and O'Brien both earn their second-straight nod to the All-MASCAC team. O'Brien was recognized as the only defensive specialist on the prestigious 12-member squad.

Jasper followed up her strong first-year campaign with an even better one as she finished the year third in the conference in total kills (234) and fifth in kills per set (2.60). Jasper also led the team with 31 aces while she was sixth on the team with 154 digs.

For the second consecutive year, O'Brien has led her team in digs as she ended the regular season seventh in the MASCAC in digs per set (2.96) and eighth in total digs (243). O'Brien is just 144 digs away from the 1,000 milestone and 51 off the school record held by former standout Lauren Saylor (2006-09).

As one of two setters on the All-MASCAC team, she makes her first appearance on the squad. In her first season as the primary setter, she finished the year averaging 7.67 assists per set and with a total of 660 dishes – totals that were both second and third in the conference, respectively.

Lewis also helped break the club record for helpers in a season (845) and she is now just 236 away from becoming the fourth WSU player to go over the 1,000 assist mark.

In a 3-2 non-conference setback to UMass Dartmouth on September 15, Lewis reset the school record for assists with 56 while she put up the third-highest sum (48) in a 3-1 triumph against Daniel Webster the following week.

Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Bernie Chase, the women's volleyball team wrapped up their 2012 season with an overall mark of 12-15 (3-3 MASCAC). The squad earned their sixth straight berth to the conference tournament as they were upset by Salem State in the quarterfinal round, 3-1.
