Bowdoin College Defeats Worcester State in Opening Night of 2015 Midcoast Classic

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team defeated the Worcester State Lancers on the opening night of the 2015 Midcoast Classic at Morrell Gymnasium on Friday, cruising to a 3-0 triumph in their home opener. 


Bowdoin stands at 5-3 after the win, while Worcester State falls to 5-5 on the season.

 

Bowdoin dominated the first two sets, as they reached high above and defeated the Lancers 25-12 and 25-8. The third set was a bit different, as Worcester State put up a fight, eventually falling 26-24 in the third.

 

The Polar Bears recorded an overall .351 attack percentage, and were at their peak in the second set when they tacked on a .625 percentage.

 

Bowdoin's senior Christy Jewett (Sunnyvale, Calif.) totaled 12 kills on the night to lead the Polar Bears. Junior Quincy Leech (Durham, N.C.) had 22 assists, while freshman Lisa Sheldon (Venice, Calif.) added in 12 digs.

 

For the Lancers, freshman Emily Carens (Northboro, Mass.) and senior Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) had five kills apiece, while senior Meghan Deighan (Lynn, Mass.) recorded three with a .333 attack percentage.

 

Freshman setter Alexandra Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) tacked on the team-high nine assists while senior Kaylee Leduc (Swansea, Mass.) had six digs.



Tomorrow Bowdoin will host day two of the classic at the Morrell Gymnasium. Bates will battle Worcester State at 11:00 a.m. before the Polar Bears will take the court and battle with the Bobcats at 2:00 p.m.
