Worcester State Goes 0-2 at Midcoast Classic

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Worcester State Lancers won the first set of the afternoon, but then dropped the second through fourth sets to the Bates College Bobcats, resulting in a 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 28-30, 22-25) loss Saturday to conclude the Midcoast Classic hosted by Bowdoin College.

 

In the Lancers' first set they outdid their opponents with a .500 to a .069 attack percentage. The Lancers kept their attack percentages at a reasonable number throughout the remainder of the game, having an overall .295 (47-122) advantage over Bates who had a .231 attack percentage (49-130).

 

Leading the Lancers offensively was two-time Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference rookie of the week, freshman Emily Carens (Northboro, Mass.), with 11 kills and a .435 attack percentage.

 

Senior Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) and junior Jamika Townsend (Virginia Beach, Va.) recorded nine and eight kills, respectively. Townsend posted a phenomenal attack percentage, going 8-12 (.667) against the Bobcats. Townsend recorded all 39 assists for the Lancers, marking a game-high in the category.

 

Cabral led the team defensively, with 15 digs and one block. Freshman Elexi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) marked 10 digs on the afternoon, while junior Valerie Hoyle (Bridgewater, Mass.) led the team in blocks with five (three assisted).

 

This Wednesday the Lancers will travel to Bridgewater State for their second MASCAC match of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
