Volleyball Moves into First Place with Sweep of Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – The Worcester State University volleyball team scored a 3-0 victory over Salem State and in the process took sole possession of first place in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) in action at Twohig Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

The Lancers won by scores of 26-24, 25-13, and 25-14 and remain unbeaten at 4-0 in conference play. Worcester State improves to 12-7 on the season. The Vikings fall to 11-7 on the year and suffer their first loss in league play and are now 3-1.

For the Lancers, Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) contributed with 13 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) was active on the floor with powerful spikes, leading to nine kills.

The first set was tightly contested with Salem State up 24-23. The Vikings had an opportunity to win the set but had two attack errors in the last three plays. The Lancers were able to pull away ending the set on a 3-0 run.

The Lancers started the second set hot in going up 6-0. Worcester State was able to take advantage of the momentum, widening the margin to 13. The Lancers were able to pull away to win the set 25-13.

In the third set, Worcester State built a commanding lead at 17-9 before cruising to a 25-14 set win. The Lancers had 15 kills with a .270 hitting percentage. On the other side, poor hitting by Salem State led to only eight kills with a .133 hitting percentage.

For the Vikings, Maddi O'Connor (Hamilton, Mass.) added eight kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Emily Hennessy (Hanover, Mass.) contributed seven kills and nine digs. For Worcester State, Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) led the Lancers with 31 assists and 8 digs.

Worcester State ended the match with a .224 hitting percentage compared to Salem State's .029.
