Women’s Cross Country Finishes Fourth at University of New England Invitational

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Worcester State University women's cross country team finished in fourth place overall out of 14 teams in the 5K University of New England Invitational Saturday morning at Rotary Park.

Worcester State completed the race with 86 points, just one shy of the third place (Gordon College), and just five above second place finishers, Endicott College. One of Worcester State's runner placed in the top 10, and five of the six top finishers were freshman on the Lancers cross country squad.

Leading the way for the Lancers was freshman Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) who placed ninth out of 151 runners at the race. Rogers finished with a time of 20:44. Right behind her was last week's Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rookie of the week, freshman Laura DelleChiaie (Haverhill, Mass.), finishing 11th overall with a time of 21:01.

Three Lancers finished in a row at 21st, 22nd, and 23rd place. Those three were freshman Katerina Lucier (Portsmith, R.I.), freshman Kelsey Bedard (Leominster, Mass.), and freshman Shayla Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) with times of 21:53, 21:56, and 21:57, respectively.

A couple spots behind at 27th place came freshman Emily Bumpus (Bridgewater, Mass.) with a total time of 22:14. In 6th place for the Lancers came junior Danielle Cote (Dighton, Mass.) who recorded a 22:37 5K.

The Lancers are back at it next weekend, as they travel to UMass-Dartmouth to take place in the Shriners Invitational.
