Laura DelleChiaie Entitled to Worcester State’s Fastest Female Freshman Runner at UMass Dartmouth Course

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The women's cross country team placed 19th out of 42 teams at the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational Saturday afternoon, as Laura DelleChiaie (Haverhill, Mass.) ran the race with a 19:44.76 time – the fastest time ever ran by a freshman at Worcester State on the UMass-Dartmouth 5K course. She is currently stands as Worcester State's second-fastest runner at this course.

 

"Laura ran a career best performance to date. Her commitment to hard work in training is leading to her tenacity as a competitor," said head coach Gary Jusseaume.

 

Right behind DelleChiaie, was freshman Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) who placed 66th in the meet out of 315 runners with a time of 19:57.79 – also an incredible time for a freshman on this course.

 

Freshman Shayla Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) ran the 5K in 20:56.29, placing 132nd, while freshman Kelsey Bedard (Leominster, Mass.) finished with a time of 21:15.18 at 151st.

 

Finishing up the race for the Lancers was freshman Mikaela Dionne (Salem, Mass), freshman Katerina Lucier (Portsmouth, R.I.), and junior Danielle Cote (Dighton, Mass.) with times of 21:28.47, 21:35.27, and 21:36.81, respectively.

 

Worcester State ran six individuals in the sub varsity race, where most runners placed in the top half. Those six individuals who competed were sophomore Justine Murdocca (Milford, Mass.), sophomore Sara McIsaac (Weymouth, Mass.), sophomore Emma Rose (Worcester, Mass.), sophomore Jaime Sullivan (Hubbardston, Mass.), junior Melanie Hunter (Maynard, Mass.), and freshman Monika DiTroia (Bellingham, Mass.).

 

"Laura and her teammates are headed for more personal best performances before ECAC and NCAA invitationals," said Jusseaume.

 

Next week the women's cross country team will be in their home city for the Worcester City Meet at Moore State Park. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sep. 26.
