Peggy (Seymour) Hummel was a three sport student-athlete for
Worcester State College from 1987-1991. Peggy played field hockey,
basketball, and softball for the Lancers, excelling most notably as
a four-year player in field hockey and softball.
An enthusiastic and competitive team leader, she was captain of the
field hockey and softball teams her senior season. A goalkeeper on
the field hockey team, she posted a career goals-against average of
1.36. In her senior year she garnered first team all-MASCAC honors
with a career best 1.23 goals-against average and posted five
shutout victories.
A centerfielder on the softball team, she graduated with a career
batting average of .290. As a junior, Peggy helped the softball
team to one of its best seasons ever. The 1990 team was nationally
ranked several times throughout the season, reaching as high as
16th in the country. The team was also ranked in the top five
in the New England poll throughout much of the season. The team won
the ECAC championship that season, finishing with a 25-10 overall
record. At the completion of her senior year, Peggy was awarded
with the Worcester State Senior Female Sportsman Award (now known
as the Lancer Award).
Active in campus life, Peggy was vice president of both her junior
and senior classes. After her WSC days, the Freeport, Maine, native
returned home and became a fixture in the athletic scene as a
coach. She coached the varsity field hockey team at Freeport High
School for 10 years as well as local softball and lacrosse teams at
various levels. A member of the Maine Field Hockey Association,
Peggy received the MFHA’s President’s Award in 2004
honoring her for her hard work and dedication to the association
and for promoting field hockey in the
state of Maine.
It is with great pleasure that we induct Peggy Sue Seymour Hummel
into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
