Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Assumption College scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 10-10 tie en route to a 12-11 win over Worcester State College in a non-conference baseball game TUESDAY at Rocheleau Field. The contest was the first between the two teams since the 1999 season.

Junior first baseman Tim Scafidi (Worcester, MA) and freshman first baseman Frank Flynn (Worcester, MA) produced RBI singles to give the Greyhounds a two-run cushion.

Junior lefthander Andy Quinn (Taunton, MA) struck out six in his superb 2.1 innings of relief to pick up the victory, while junior righthander Tim Dupuis (Suffield, CT) notched his third save of the season to become the Greyhounds career leader with 10.

The Greyhounds moved to a 10-3 advantage through six innings only to have Worcester State power bring the Lancers back even.

Junior centerfielder Derek Migrants (Ayer, MA) hammered an inside-the-park homerun (his fourth of the season) to left centerfield in the first inning for the Greyhounds. Sophomore designated hitter Shane Coakley (Spencer, MA) blasted his third home run of the season and junior third baseman Nick Dortona (Malden, MA) drove across another with an RBI double as the Lancers tied the game 2-2 in the second inning.

In the fourth inning, the Greyhounds got RBI singles from senior second baseman Mike Baillageron (Worcester, MA), Migrants, and senior third baseman Mike Direda (Shrewsbury, MA) and a RBI fielders choice from freshman catcher Mike Foley (Worcester, MA) to take a 6-2 lead after three innings.

A two-run triple by Migrants---who finished with a single, triple, home run and five RBI---highlighted a four-run fourth inning to stretch the lead to 10-2.

The Lancers then scored eight unanswered runs.

In the fifth inning senior centerfielder Matt Hart (North Easton, MA) belted his second homer of the season and sophomore first baseman Nick Fluegge (Ware, MA) hit a monster two-run homer (his third of the season) in a three-run fifth inning. The Lancers had six hits including RBI singles by Fluegge, Coakley and sophomore shortstop Ryan Raleigh (Cranston, RI) to highlight a five-run sixth.

Sophomore Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury, MA) singled across a run in the ninth inning for Worcester State to make things interesting.

Junior Kevin Hayes (Medford, MA) took his first loss of the season on the mound for the Lancers while junior Andrew Quinn (Taunton, MA) earned the win in relief after he tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Greyhounds.

Assumption is now 12-10 overall, while Worcester State is 8-9. The Greyhounds are at Southern New Hampshire University Wednesday at 3:30 PM in a Northeast-10 Conference game while the Lancers will host UMass Boston on Thursday at 3:30 at WPI.
