Horton Distinguished With ECAC New England Honor

Cape Cod, MA --- Senior forward Maurice Horton has been named to the All-ECAC New England third-team as announced by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference communications office this past week.

Horton along with Bridgewater State junior Nicholas Motta (Fairhaven, MA), who was selected to the second-team, were the only players from the MASCAC to be selected.

Horton, who hails from Detroit, MI, finished the regular season leading the conference in points (513), total points (20.5) and assists (4.56) while he was also second in rebounding (9.0) and total assists (114). Horton was also third in total rebounds with 225 boards. His NCAA Division III ranks in points, rebounding and assists are ranked 35th, 60th and 63rd, respectively as of this past week.

Two weeks ago, Horton was also tabbed to the All-MASCAC first-team for the second straight season.

Horton also ranked in the top ten in several other MASCAC categories which include finishing the season second in defensive rebounding (6.32), fourth in total blocks (24), sixth in offensive rebounding (2.68), ninth in three-point percentage (.339) and free throw percentage (.633) and tenth in field goal percentage (.454).

Horton ended his two-year Worcester State career 15th on the all-time scoring list with 1,110 points as he joined his brother Mario Horton (1997-2001), who is ninth with 1,428 points. The siblings joined Al Pettway (2,205; 1990-94) and Kevin Pettway (1,061; 1997-98 & 1999-2000) as the only other brothers who have scored 1,000 points in program history.

Horton’s per game averages are 21.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.04 assists while he totaled 485 caroms and 206 dishes. Horton also ended his career in a WSC uniform with 51 steals and 41 blocks.

Blake Schultz of Williams was tabbed as the ECAC New England Player of the year while Colby-Sawyer’s Jason Chevrefils earned the regional rookie of the year honors. The GNAC led the way with the with six honorees out of the 15 players that were selected.

Worcester State finished the season with a 13-14 record under the direction of 16th year head coach Dave Lindberg. The squad was bounced in the MASCAC semifinals to conference tournament champion Bridgewater State, 73-59.
