Wheaton 4, Worcester State 1
Norton, MA --- The Wheaton College men's soccer team completed
its regular season home slate in strong form Wednesday afternoon
against non-league foe Worcester State College, as four Lyons
posted goals during a 4-1 victory on Keefe Field.
Wheaton, which is now 9-4-2 on the season, downed the Lancers for
the fifth time in the teams' last six meetings and holds a 5-2 edge
in the series history. Worcester State dropped its eighth
game in nine tries while falling to 5-9-2.
Eight different Lyons contributed to the hosts' balanced scoring
attack, as Wheaton never trailed. Sophomore Yuri
Moreira (Marlboro, MA) put the Blue and White on the board
at 5:14. Senior Ben Resnicow (Newton, MA)
served a free kick from 40 yards out toward the middle of the box,
where a streaking Moreira got just enough of his head on the ball
for his team-leading 11th goal. The Lyons entered the half
with a one-goal edge while holding advantages of 12-2 in shots and
8-0 in corner kicks.
Sophomore back David Ferriero (Medway, MA), who
ended up with the game-winner, doubled Wheaton's lead just 3:15
into the second half after receiving a pass from classmate
Kyle Sye (Acton, MA). Worcester State made
it a 2-1 game at 65:54 thanks in part to a defensive miscue, as
senior Brian Andrade (Hudson, MA) found himself
alone with the Wheaton keeper for his team-best 11th marker.
The Lyons quickly pushed their lead back to two when freshman
Chris Thomas (Cumberland, ME) found sophomore
Josh Solomon (Acton, MA) for the quick strike at
68:14 just 2:20 after the Lancer goal. First-year
Kevin Patnode (Coventry, RI) added an insurance
tally in the 87th minute just after subbing in, taking a feed from
sophomore David Winrow (South Weymouth, MA).
The goal marked Patnode's first career tally.
Sophomore goalie Cole Davidson (Needham, MA)
improved to 7-2-2 overall with a pair of saves in the win, while
Worcester State sophomore Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA)
turned aside seven of Wheaton's 23 shots.
The Lyons will finish the regular season with a pair of New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) road games,
beginning on Saturday against league-unbeaten Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT) at 2:30 p.m.
