Men's Soccer Plays Westfield to Scoreless Draw

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University men's soccer team played Westfield State to a scoreless tie on Saturday afternoon in MASCAC action at Coughlin Field.

With the draw, the Lancers move to 4-4-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in the MASCAC, while the Owls move to 2-4-2 and 1-0-2 in conference play.

Westfield controlled the play in the opening half, but was unable to find the back of the net, outshooting Worcester State 6-2 in the half. Senior Dave Serafino (Ludlow, Mass.) had the best opportunity of the period in the 34th minute. Serafino took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, forcing Worcester State goalkeeper Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) to make a leaping save to tip the ball over the crossbar to keep it scoreless.

The second half was played much more evenly, as the shots were split 8-8, but neither team scored and the game went to overtime.

The chess match continued in the extra sessions. Both teams tallied just a single shot in the first overtime period, and neither recorded a shot in the second overtime session and the game ended scoreless.

Guilmette finished the game with six saves to earn the draw, while Westfield's Tyler Diotalevi (Ludlow, Mass.) made one save in the draw.

Next up for the Lancers, they will play a non-conference matchup against Keene State on the road on Wednesday evening. Westfield State will be in action the same night, travelling to Rhode Island College for a non-conference contest against the Anchormen.
