Providence, RI --- Sophomore Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) reset the school record in the 60 meters with a blistering time of 6.94 and classmate David Germain (Malden, MA) cleared second in the high jump (1.98m/6-6) as they both propelled the men's indoor track and field team at the Alden Invitational hosted by Brown.
The first meet of the campaign featured deep competition from several Division I institutions including the hosting Bears, Providence College and Bryant.
Gibson elicpsed a 2001 mark (6.98) that had been originally established by Lancer Hall of Famer Staney Egbor at Harvard.The time is currently the best Division III time as of this evening and it qualifies him for the Open New Englands.
Germain's solid height in the long jump stamped his ticket for the ECAC Division III Championships as sophomore Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) was right behind in fourth (1.88m/6-2) with a Division III New England height.
Gibson also finished the meet with fourth in both the 200 (23.07) and the long jump (6.71m/22-0.25) for a pair of Division III New England spots. The 200 time is also an ECAC qualifer.
Other sprinters who ran Division III New England meet times included senior Luke Curtis (Dudley, MA) with fifth the 60 (7.14), classmate Todd Paquin (Pelham, NH) who posted 17th in the 60 (7.27) and first-year Jerome Drane (Uxbridge, MA) added sixth in the 200 (23.19) and 19th in the 60 (7.29).
Curtis' and Paquin's 60 times along with Drane's 200 mark are top 50 times in the NCAA Division III as of this evening.
Junior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) also hit a Division III New England standard in the 60 meter hurdles with fifth (8.90) before he registered sixth in the pole vault (3.65m/11-11.50). Classmate Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) accomplished the same feat with a toss of third in the shot put (13.73m/45-0.50).
Sophomore Stephen Gannon (Foxboro, MA), junior Ramses Rafael (Lawrence, MA) and third-year Kevin Maciel (Tewksbury, MA) all place fourth (51.97), sixth (52.23) and seventh (53.64), respectively in the 400.
Second-year Kevin Conant (E. Longmeadow, MA) rounded out the sprinters with 11th in the 200 (23.92) and 22nd in the 60 (7.36).
Senior Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) was the runner-up in the 1,000 (2:41.78) and sophomore Patrick Bova (Princeton, MA) wasn't too far behind with fourth (2:45.12)
Fourth-year Andrew Garcia (Brea, CA) cleared fifth in the pole vault (3.95m/12-11.50).
The Lancers will compete next week at the Harvard Open.
