Everson, Hassett, Cordio Named To All-MASCAC Softball Team

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Senior Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA), junior Hannah Everson (Methuen, MA) and sophomore Carolyn Hassett (Charlton, MA) have all been selected to the All-MASCAC team in a vote by the leagues eight head coaches on Wednesday.

Everson, who was named MASCAC Co-Pitcher of the Year, was one of three pitchers to garner first-team accolades while Cordio and Hassett each earned second-team nods. Fourth-year head coach Jen Kapenas was also honored by her peers as the Turfer MASCAC Coach of the Year.

Cordio, who earned a second-team nod in 2010 and 2009 as a shortstop, wraps up a stellar career that saw her hit at a .314 clip with 38 base-knocks, eight doubles, three triples and two home runs. As the teams lead-off hitter she added team highs of 36 runs, 21 RBIs, 17 walks and swiped five bases in six attempts.

Cordio topped the MASCAC in runs scored while she was tied for fifth in both walks and triples.

In 114 games out of a possible 117 over the last three seasons, Cordio has boosted a career batting average of .355 with 134 hits, 91 singles, 28 doubles and six homers to go with 97 runs, 62 RBIs, 198 total bases and 19 swipes.

She is only three doubles away from tying the top spot, 20 base-knocks away from second place and is currently in the number two slot in runs scored.

Everson has been instrumental this season in the Lancers success on the softball diamond. She has posted a 14-5 overall record and a 2.51 earned run average to go with 124 strikeouts in 125.1 innings.

In MASCAC only statistics, she was a perfect 8-0 with a 0.95 ERA and 56 punch outs in 51 innings. At the plate, Everson has also batted .275 with eight runs and eight RBIs with four doubles.

A five-time MASCAC Pitcher of the Week honoree, Everson is among the top four, tying for second in complete games (17), third in wins, fourth in ERA, strikeouts and innings while she was fifth in opposing batting average (.222).

Everson is also ranked in the top 100 in three categories in latest NCAA Division III statistical standings. She is 58th overall in strikeouts per seven innings (6.93), tied for 65th in total strikeouts and 78th in ERA.

Everson is also 16th in punch outs per seven innings in New England, 14th in ERA and 20th in cumulative strikeouts.

Hassett makes her first appearance on the All-MASCAC team. With a .340 batting average which is currently second on the team, Hassett has 34 base-knocks, 19 runs scored, eight RBIs and is a perfect 8-for-8 on the base paths.

In conference-only games, she posted the seventh-highest batting average (.447) with 17 hits in 38 at bats. As the Lancers have won 14 out of their last 18 games, Hassett has been torrid at the plate with a .460 batting average (23-for-50), 12 runs scored, four doubles and five RBIs.

Hassett has also been a presence defensively, making just one error in the outfield and she has gunned down nine batters at the plate. She also had a 14-game hitting streak to her credit that ended in a 9-1 five-inning setback to Trinity on Monday.

Kapenas, who was named MASCAC Coach of the Year last in 2011, has helped guide her team to a 21-17 overall mark including a 12-2 record in conference play. The Lancers captured their second consecutive league title and first outright crown since 1987.

Since going 10-21-1 in her first year the Blue and Gold have gone 70-47 with a .598 winning percentage since and won their first-ever MASCAC Tournament last year.

Worcester State is the top seed in this week's double-elimination MASCAC softball tournament for the first time ever and will face off against Westfield State later this afternoon at 5 PM. The remainder semifinals and championship will be played at Rockwood Park on Saturday and Sunday.
