Women's Soccer Falls In Overtime To Westfield State, 1-0

Westfield, MA --- Westfield State senior Kayley Miller (Ludlow, MA) netted the game-winning marker in the 99th minute to help lift the Owls to a dramatic 1-0 triumph over Worcester State in overtime this evening in MASCAC women's soccer action.

The contest featured the lone conference teams that had not been beaten in league play as Westfield State improved their record to 10-0-1 overall (3-0 MASCAC). The Lancers drop to 4-5 and 2-1 in the conference circuit.

Tonight's win over the Blue and Gold marked the first regular season victory for the Owls since 2006.

Worcester State was outshot 11-2 in the opening frame, but freshman keeper Mia Koutoulas (Danvers, MA) stopped five shots to help keep the hosts off the board and preserve a scoreless game.

The second half started much the same way the opening frame did, but the Lancers broke through in the final 20 minutes of play as they finished with the 6-1 advantage in shots.

The best chances included chances at close range by sophomore Shelby Archer (Dayville, CT) and freshman Kaitlyn Coelho (Ludlow, MA) near the 75th minute mark and an opportunity on net by junior Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) in the 83rd minute. All three were turned aside by Westfield State junior Jess Habif (Holliston, MA).

Archer also had a bid that hit the crossbar with 2:40 left on the clock in regulation.

In overtime neither team had a good chance and it nearly appeared that the contest would head for more extra time, but Miller would end it with her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Miller received the ball from midfield, following pass, by senior Brittanie McGregor (Ludlow, MA) and classmate Leann Rivard (Chicopee, MA), who slipped behind the defense and buried the shot from inside the box.

Koutoulas finished with nine stops as Habif collected five saves in her third shutout of the season.

Both squads will host non-conference opponents at 7 PM in the next week. Worcester State takes on Western Connecticut while the Owls entertain Trinity (CT).
