Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Soccer team (0-2, 0-0) is back in action this afternoon at Eastern Connecticut as they look to grab not only their first goal, but first win of the season. The Lancers are coming off a hard battle that saw them just edged out, 1-0 by Suffolk in just their second game of the young season.
Final
Worcester State:1
Eastern Connecticut: 0
How it Happened:
Worcester would find their rhythm early in the first half of this LEC-MASCAC battle scoring the opening goal of the game just four minutes into the action when a pass from senior Maddie Breuer (Hubbardston, MA) would find the foot of sophomore Ava Lemanski (Clinton, MA) for the quick release to the top left corner of the goal to open up the offensive season for the Lancers. Worcester would not release the pressure as they took advantage of not only their high pressure but the low setting sun into the Warriors defense to pepper the Eastern Connecticut defense. Halfway through the opening half would see the first real series of tests to the sophomore Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA) as the Warriors broke away into the box, but quick defensive reactions and a clear downfield the threats were quickly neutralized.
Worcester would take a 7-3 shot lead into halftime on top of a 1-0 lead.
The second half would see a continuation of the same intensity of the first with the Lancers jumping out early with the pressure on the Warrior defense. Eastern Connecticut would have a number of opportunities of their own in the early minutes of the half, recording two quick corner kicks, but Worcester was set for the pieces and pushed each attempt away. As the final minutes of the half clicked down in Connecticut, the Warriors raised their pressure on the Lancers, noting attempt after attempt in their comeback bid. With just five minutes remaining in the game an impressive team unified save for the Lancers would keep Eastern Connecticut off the scoreboard after an initial save from Gumienny would pop free, but the defensive unit behind would not even hesitate, collecting the ball and clearing it down the left side of the field and out of the box. The Warriors would raise the temperature for the last five minutes making a nearly all East Conn. game but it would not be enough to take down the unified Worcester defense as the Lancers grab their first win of the season 1-0.
The second half would even out the shot attempts, but Worcester would still come out ahead with 13 attempts to 12, with seven finding frame to the Warriors 4.
