Women's Track Finishes Second Overall At MASCAC Championships

 

Gorham, ME --- Senior Briana Wise (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) and junior Christy Deininger (N. Attleboro, MA) highlighted seven titles for the Worcester State women's indoor track and field team as the Lancers placed second overall at the MASCAC Championships this evening at the University of Southern Maine.

Westfield State won the meet with 228 points followed by Worcester State's sum of 192 while the Blue and Gold scored 75 in the New England Alliance standings for fifth overall.

Wise successfully defended her 200 meter MASCAC/Alliance crown with first (25.85) before she added third in the 55 (7.41) among other conference competitors.

Wise also teamed with sophomore teammates Liz Bodensieck (Raynham, MA), Alexandria McMahon and Brittany Hodgerney (Leicester, MA) with for the top 4x200 meter relay time in the MASCAC (1:46.55), which was nearly a second better than their record-setting time in 2012.

Deininger was the other standout with the top 55 meter hurdles split – just 0.5 seconds off her meet record – with first (8.44) before she was the runner-up in the 55 (7.41) and fifth in the 200 (27.56).

The 4x400 meter relay team of Hodgerney, McMahon, junior Megan Taylor (Danvers, MA) and sophomore Kim West (Harvard, MA) teamed for the top MASCAC time (4.07.70), which was also third in the Alliance.

Other MASCAC medal winners included McMahon in the 400 meters (1:01.68) along with sophomore classmates Amanda Caldarone (Danvers, MA) in the long jump (17-0.50/5.20m) and Cayla Leinonen (Spencer, MA) in the high jump (4-11.75/1.52m).

Caldarone also registered second in the 55 meter hurdles (8.96) and McMahon had a leap of third in the long jump (5.00m/16-4.75). Taylor tallied second in the 400 (1:02.23) and third in the high jump (4-11.75/1.47m).

In the field, junior Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, ME) finished second in the MASCAC and posted the third-best alliance toss in the shot put (37-11.50/11.57m) while third-year Marlene Christenson (Danvers, MA) recorded second in the weight throw (38-11/11.86m).

Freshman Francesca Casasanta (Hopkinton, MA) was the runner-up in the high jump (4-11.75/1.47m) as third-year Amanda Holden (Lunenburg, MA) chalked up second in the triple jump (33-01.25/10.09m).

Hodgerney put up third in the 200 (26.70) and sixth in the 55 meters (7.86), West was third in the 600 (1:43.44) while Reihl chipped in with third in the 400 (1:02.67). Junior Heidi Bezemes-Turner (Beverly, MA) finished fourth in the 55 (7.57).

Bodensieck timed fourth in the 55 meters (7.57) and sixth in the 200 (27.71). Second-year Chelsey Peso (Uxbridge, MA) placed fourth in the 1,000 as freshman Maddison Benson (Attleboro, MA) registered fifth in the 55 meter hurdles (7.86).

First-year Molly Downing (Dedham, MA) notched fourth in the shot put (31-01/10.08m) to round out the competitors for Worcester State.

Select Lancers will return to Southern Maine next week to compete at the two-day Division III New England Championships starting on Friday.
