25 Earn Winter All-Academic Team Nods, Second Most In MASCAC

 

Westfield, MA --- Senior teamates Ali Barrett (Hingham, MA), Christy Deininger (N. Attleboro, MA) and Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, ME) underscored 25 honorees on the MASCAC Winter All-Academic team as announced by publicist Emily Diekelmann.

Other selections were senior Heidi Bezemes-Turner (Beverly, MA), junior classmates Liz Bodensieck (Raynham, MA), Amanda Caldarone (Danvers, MA), Brittany Hodgerney (Leicester, MA), Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA), Alexandria McMahon (E. Longmeadow, MA).

The sophomores included Samantha Barron (N. Andover, MA), Maddison Benson (Attleboro, MA), Eva Bunszell (Danvers, MA), Francesca Casasanta (Hopkinton, MA), Amy Defrancesco (Tewksbury, MA), Molly Downing (Dedham, MA), Dalena Le (Worcester, MA/Doherty), Emily Riehl (Trumbull, CT), Kelly Sterns (Danvers, MA) and Nichole Tillery (Auburn, MA).

First-time selections were Katherine Becker (Haverhill, MA), Lily Curtis (Dudley, MA), Melanie Hunter (Maynard, MA), Elizabeth McCormack (Gloucester, MA) and Erin McIntyre (Whitinsville, MA).

For Barrett, Deininger and Werneth, the trio earned the prestigious accolade all four times during the course of their academic career while Hodgerney and Jasper have each been recognized three times each. 

In addition to claiming the second-highest number of student-athletes in the conference, the Blue and Gold finished with a 3.17 grade point average.

At the end of the 2012-13 academic year, the women's track and field team earned their first-ever USTFCCCA All-Academic team award for posting an overall GPA above 3.10 while four student-athletes earned prestigious All-USTFCCCA laurels.

To earn a spot on the MASCAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based GPA during their season of competition.

Under the direction of second-year head coach Jim Lemieux, the Lancers placed third in the conference standings as both 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams earned All-Division III New England accolades.

Among institutions in the MASCAC, Worcester State had 64 overall selections on the league winter academic honor roll for the third highest sum in the league. The total number of student-athletes also marked the highest since the conference began listing its all-academic honor roll on a season-by-season basis during the 2009-10 academic year.
