Women's Volleyball Falls Twice At City Tournament


WPI 3, Worcester State 0

Worcester, MA --- Senior teammates Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) and Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) combined for 15 kills to help lead WPI to a 3-0 triumph in the final match of the afternoon.

The Engineers (6-2) edged the Lancers (2-4) in three consecutive closely contested sets, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-20.

WPI would have to rally in the first set, to earn the hard-fought triumph. Down 18-14, the Crimson and Gray knotted the score 20-20 and went on a 5-2 run to close out the opening frame.

Other standouts for the Boynton Hillers included D'Angelo who put up a tournament-best 25 digs in the finale while Dorenfeld chipped in with 16 for the double-double. Fourth-year Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) contributed 19 assists and teammate Alyssa Findanza (Ellington, CT) dished out nine.

The Lancers were paced by senior Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) who had a match-best nine kills as junior Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) added a season-high 21 digs. In addition to her solid day on the court, she would finish with one solo block and a pair of block assists.

Third-year Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) rounded out the standouts for the Blue and Gold with 13 digs.

Beovich also contributed three of her team's six block assists in the win.

 

 

Clark 3, Worcester State 1

Freshman Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, NM) and Mel Conde (Union City, CA) both recorded double-doubles for Clark as the Cougars would post a 4-1 win over Worcester State in the opener.

Clark took the 25-17 victory in the first set before Worcester State rallied for the 26-24 triumph in the second. But the Cougars would notch consecutive winning decisions to seal the match (25-21 and 25-9).

Glass-Smythe finished with 15 kills and 18 digs as Conde contributed 13 kills and 11 digs. Others with double-digit dig totals included sophomore Kaitlyn Stuck (Bourne, MA) who had a tournament best 26 digs and Spera who had 10. Junior Rachel Sprea (N. Hollywood,CA) also stood-out with 37 assists.

The Lancers were once again propelled by Lebel who finished with 10 kills while O'Brien added 20 digs. Freshman Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, MA) pitched in with 11 digs and sophomore Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) notched eight kills. Second-year Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) dished 27 assists.

The Cougars had eight service aces and 12 block assists in the win.
