Worcester State Rallies Late To Knock off Salve Regina, 10-5

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College baseball team scored 5 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a, 5-5, tie and defeat the Salve Regina University Seahawks, 10-5, Wednesday afternoon at Fitton Field on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross. The non-conference win is Worcester State’s third in a row improving the Lancers to 11-14 on the year. Salve Regina drops to 18-13-1.

Worcester State jumped out to a, 3-0, lead after the first two innings of play. The Lancers scored a pair in the first frame when Chris Logan (Spencer, MA) doubled home Ryan Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA) who hit a one out single to left field. Logan, who advanced to third on a throw to the plate, scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA). Worcester State added their third run when Matt Hart (Easton, MA) doubled home Ryan LaPrade (Leominster, MA) who hit a two out single.

Salve Regina got on the board in the top of the third inning with a single run when shortstop Steve Tressler (Phoenix, AZ) led off the inning with his second homerun of the season.

Worcester State got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury, MA) scoring Gusha who singled leading off the frame.

Both teams plated runs in the fourth inning making the score, 5-2. Justin Collett (S. Portland, ME) led off the inning for the Seahawks with a single and was doubled home by sophomore Riley Diaz (Miami, FL). The Lancers scored on a RBI single by Hart scoring LaPrade who had singled and then stole second and third base.

Salve scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to tie the game at, 5-5, after 7 ½. Tressler led off the fifth with a single and stole second base. An infield out got him to third and he scored on a run producing ground out by Adam Gingras (N. Attleboro, MA). In the sixth, catcher Robert Peruzzotti (Mystic, CT) doubled in Diaz who singled to lead off the inning. Salve Regina tied the score when Collett scored after leading off with a walk.

Worcester State scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. The eventual game-winner came with LaPrade hit a 2-run bases loaded single to left field.

Tony Brunetta (Franklin, MA) got the win in relief for the Lancers. Matt Wierzbicki (Wethersfield, CT) took the loss.

LaPrade finished the day going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Hart, Hawley and Logan each had two hit days. Diaz, Peruzzotti and Tressler also had multiple hits for the visitors.
