No. 19 Amherst College Shuts Out Worcester State in Wednesday Matinee Matchup

WORCESTER, Mass.—Connor Gunn (Kingsport, Tenn.) led No. 19 Amherst College to a 3-0 victory over the Worcester State Lancers baseball team in afternoon play on Wednesday (Apr. 13) at the Lyon's Diamond.

 

Amherst College plated the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI-single by Nick Nardone (Fairfield, Conn.). The game remained close with a 1-0 score through the top of the sixth inning until Amherst College drove in their second run of the game. After a phenomenal double play by Lancer third-baseman John Boyd (Worcester, Mass.), Amherst's Gunn answered back with a double. Gunn was batted in by teammate Anthony Spina (Brooklyn, N.Y.), leaving the score at 2-0 at the end of the sixth inning.

 

Amherst College plated the final run of the game in the seventh inning, taking advantage of Lancer fielding errors. Amherst's Max Steinhorn (Bethesda, M.d.) singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. Teammate Harry Roberson (Arlington, Mass.) then ripped an RBI-single to centerfield, scoring Steinhorn and putting Amherst ahead of the Lancers 3-0.

 

Amherst College outhit the Lancers 11-5 in the contest. Worcester State's Jake Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.), Matt Sabourin (Stow, Mass.) and Boyd each had double plays for the Lancers.

 

Amherst pitcher Wilson Taylor (San Antonio, Texas) pitched the full nine innings, shutting out the Lancers and allowing only five hits. With the win, Taylor's record improves to 2-0 for the season.

 

Owen Gibbons (Sterling, Mass.) pitched six full innings for the Lancers, allowing one earned run on eight hits. With the loss, Gibbons' record falls to 1-1.

 

Amherst College (15-4) returns to action tomorrow, April 14, in a home-game match-up versus Eastern Conn. with a 4:00 pm start time. Worcester State (10-13, 1-3 MASCAC) will travel to MIT tomorrow, April 14, with a 3:30 pm first pitch.
