Baseball Drops 7-3 Decision to UMass Boston

BOSTON – The Worcester State University baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to UMass Boston Monday (April 3) evening at Monan Park, as the Beacons scored their seven runs on eight hits and four Lancer errors.

With the win, the Beacons advance to 10-5 on the season, while Worcester State dips to 4-8 overall.

The Beacons jumped out to an early start as they scored two runs on one hit in the bottom of the 1st. Two walks in the inning put two runners on base, from where Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) drove them home on a 2-RBI double to right center.

The Lancers cut the lead in half in the top of the 3rd when the Beacons walked a batter home, and Seth Leslie (Phillipston, Mass.) picked up the RBI. Despite the bases loaded with no outs, the Beacons held the Lancers from scoring any additional runs as relief pitcher, Steve Witkowski (Pittsfield, Mass.) struck out a batter, picked off a baserunner, and forced a ground out for the final out of the inning.

The Beacons added two more runs as they tallied one apiece in the 4th and 5th innings to advance the score to 4-1 in their favor.

Worcester State scored two runs on four hits in the top of the 7th to cut their deficit to just one. Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.) and Jake Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.) marked the two runs as they scored on an RBI single from Ben Palatino (Hudson, Mass.) and an RBI triple from designated hitter, Adam Barry (Auburn, Mass.).

Nevertheless, the Beacons tallied three runs on two hits and one error in the bottom of the inning, to put the score at 7-3, which would prove to be the final score of the ballgame.

UMass Boston's offense was led by Fowler who picked up a team-high three hits, two runs and two RBI. Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) notched two hits on the occasion, while Nick Hergoz (Riverhead, N.Y.) and Josh Lopez (New Haven, Conn.) reached base twice with a hit and a walk each.

Leading the Lancers with the bats was Barry who batted .750 (3-4) on the evening with one RBI. Mike Ferrara (Easton, Mass.) collected two hits, while Palatino marked a .667 on base percentage with one hit, a walk, and an RBI.

On the mound, UMass Boston's Joe Maguire (Peabody, Mass.) earned the win in 3.1 innings pitched, permitting just one run on one hit. Worcester State's starter, Tyler Barrie (Oxford, Mass.) received the loss in a 5-inning performance.

Next up, the Lancers will face WPI in a non-conference game at the New England Baseball Complex on Wednesday, April 5. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
