Worcester State 1, UMass Dartmouth 0 Strokes-Away
North Dartmouth, MA - Meghan Feehan (Lunenburg, MA) scored the winning goal in a penalty stroke shootout to give visiting Worcester State a 1-0 overtime victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team in a Little East Conference game at Cressy Field Tuesday.
Feehan lifted a shot high into the corner of the net past UMass Dartmouth junior goalkeeper Seana Golden (Somerset, MA) to put the Lancers ahead, 3-2, in the fourth round of the five-round shootout. The Corsairs, who had shot first, then took their final attempt, but a shot by sophomore forward Natalie Brown (Falmouth, MA) was saved by WSC goalkeeper Erin MacDonald (Dedham, MA).
Sophomore forward Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA) and freshman defender Maille Lynch-Gilbert (Petersham, MA) gave UMass Dartmouth a 2-0 lead on the Corsairs' first two shots of the shootout. Demi Favreau (Phillipston, MA) then scored for WSC. MacDonald stopped a shot by UMD senior defender Alison Paige (Mendon, MA) before Megan Rosborough (Uxbridge, MA) scored for the Lancers to tie the shootout at 2-2.
The Corsairs had the best chance to score before the shootout, as sophomore defender Becca Festinger (Greenfield, MA) hit the post with a shot three minutes into the first overtime period.
"We didn't come out strong, and we have done this in a few conference games," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "I thought we had the better chances in the second half and in the overtime period, but we couldn't finish. We needed to get off to a better start. We have to stop digging ourselves a hole, especially in these conference games."
The Corsairs outshot WSC, 22-11. MacDonald made eight saves, while Golden had seven.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 7-4 and 2-3 in the Little East with the defeat, while Worcester State improved to 8-3 and 4-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Anna Maria Thursday evening. WSC will host New England College Thursday evening.
