New England College Scores Late Goal To Defeat Field Hockey, 1-0

Henniker, NH --- New England College junior Kate Roberge (Essex, VT) netted the lone goal with 10 minutes remaining in the game to lift the Pilgrims past the visiting Worcester State Lancers, 1-0, this evening in non-conference field hockey action.

With the win the Pilgrims improve to 6-7 overall, while the loss drops the Lancers to 7-6.

The two teams would remain scoreless through the opening 60 minutes of play before Roberge would net her fifth goal of the season rebounding post-graduate student Emily Kuchta's (Norwalk, CT) saved shot putting the Pilgrims up 1-0.

The Lancers would continue to battle with two shots on net in the final eight minutes, but would come up empty as the Pilgrims defense held strong.

Leading the way for Worcester State was senior Samantha Janda (Sterling, MA) and junior Ally Valencia (Foxboro, MA) who each recorded three shots on net.

Blue and Gold senior Lauren Daley (Dedham, MA) registered two defensive saves in the losing effort giving her a team-high six on the season.

The first one came 12 minutes into the second half to preserve the scoreless game as the second stop came in the waning minutes of regulation. Daley's total is tied for second place in the Little East while she shares it with two other players.

NEC sophomore Jaclyn Papagni (Lynnfield, MA) also made a team rejection early in the contest to set the tone for the hosts.

The Pilgrims finished the game with the slight 17-14 advantage in shots.

Picking up the win in goal for NEC was post-graduate student Mary Roux (Hillsborough, NH) who recorded 10 saves.  Having an impressive game in net for Worcester State was junior Rebecca Mullen (Peabody, MA) who made 12 stops.

Both teams will travel to conference opponents for their next games on Saturday.  The Lancers will take on Little East rival Westfield State at 12 PM, while the Pilgrims will match-up against NAC foe Rivier College at 5 o'clock.
