Lancers Play to Draw in Crucial Conference Match with the Owls

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Men's Soccer team (1-5, 0-1) look to rebound from an early conference season loss versus Bridgewater in their second home conference match of the season. The Lancers kick off Homecoming and Family Weekend as they take on Westfield State in a bid to continue their winning ways after claiming their first of the season in a dramatic final minute victory over Curry College on Tuesday.

Final

Worcester State:1

Westfield State: 1

How it Happened:

The first half of action between the Owls and Lancers was a statement midfield battle with nearly 10 minutes already eclipsed by the time the first shots were taken for either team. Worcester would grab the first attempt, a header by sophomore Arthur Tome (Milford, MA) that would sail over the top of the post. Wide shots were the testament of the game for both teams as each defensive unit would force off kilter and unbalanced attempts. Worcester would strike first in the first off a free kick from junior Wilbur Garcia (Bilboa, Spain) who placed the ball perfectly for a header by senior Malcom Hawkins (View Park, CA) who sent it flying over the leaping arms of Luke Theroux to grab a 1-0 lead. Each team would continue to work their way up and down the field but with just over two minutes remaining the Owls finally managed to find success of their own as an initial cross was knocked off a Lancer foot into the waiting strike of Westfield's Carter Daughdrill who one timed the rebound over the leaping hands of first year Sergio Torrado (Arroyomolinos, ES) to send the game into halftime tied 1-1.

The second half of action was a complete even match between the two teams as each worked to crack the tie. Westfield would record six attempts while Worcester would attempt seven and have a 3-1 edge in the corners, but the early symptoms of wide shots would plague the teams as each would have trouble finding the frame. Torrado would end the game with two saves while Theroux would wrap up the day with four. Worcester and Westfield would end the early conference slated game in a 1-1 tie and grab a much needed tie in conference play for the Lancers.
