Rogers Wins 10K as Outdoor Track & Field Opens New England Championship

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Senior Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) was crowned the New England Champion in the 10,000 meter run as eight Worcester State University outdoor track & field student-athletes competed Friday on the opening day of the NCAA Division III New England Championships at Williams College.

Rogers ran a time of 37:47.63 to win the race by nearly 30 seconds, and shatter her own school record by nearly 35 seconds.

Sophomore John Ojukwu (Stow, Mass.) looked sharp on the day, as the sprinter was the fastest finisher in the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash. Ojukwu qualified for tomorrow's finals with a time of 10.90 seconds.

Three Lancers competed in the men's hammer throw, led by senior Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.), who finished in 11th with a throw of 47.83 meters. Classmate Anthony Christo (Peabody, Mass.) was right behind him in 12th with a throw of 47.75 meters, while freshman Dariel Canela (Peabody, Mass.) was 29th at 39.34 meters.

Abdulrazak Frederick (Shrewsbury, Mass.) ran the preliminaries of the 110 meter hurdles on Friday and placed 13th with a time of 15.51 seconds.

Junior Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.) and sophomore Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) rounded out the Lancer competitors on Friday, as each ran in the preliminary round of the 100 meter dash. MacGregor finished ninth at 12.53 seconds, and Mensah in 18th at 12.74 seconds.

A handful of Lancers will be back in action on Saturday for day two of the New England Championships from Williams College. First events of the day are set to begin at 10 a.m.
