Women’s Hoops Earns Second Straight 30+ Point MASCAC Win

WORCESTER, Mass. – For the second straight game in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play, the Worcester State women's basketball team held their opponent under 45 points and won by more than 30, as the Lancers collected a 74-41 victory over MCLA on Saturday afternoon at Brissette Court.

The Lancers (7-7, 2-1 MASCAC) placed two players in double figures, led by Abby St. Martin (Putnam, Conn.), who had 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) chipped in with 13 points, three assists and 5 caroms. Worcester shot a solid 51% and owned a commanding 41-13 edge off the glass in the win.

The Lancers opened up a 21-14 lead after one quarter and eventually led 42-27 at halftime.  They would break the game open by outscoring MCLA 16-9 in the third quarter to quell any thoughts of a Trailblazer comeback.

In the final quarter, Worcester held MCLA to just four points, including 1-17 from the floor and 0-7 from behind the three-point line.

Emma Poplawski (Rowe, Mass.) led Worcester with seven rebounds, one of seven players with four or more rebounds in the win. Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had six points, four rebounds and two steals, while Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) scored eight points to go with four rebounds and a pair of steals as well. Madison Gutierrez (Holyoke, Mass.) had five points and four boards in the victory.

Brooke Digennaro was the lone Trailblazer in double figures.  She led all scorers with 23 points on 10-19 shooting.

Worcester State and MCLA (0-14, 0-4) are both back in action at 5:30 PM on Monday night at their respective home courts. The Lancers will entertain Salem State, while the Trailblazers host Fitchburg State.
