O’Brien Stops 20 Shots to Help Lancers to 10-6 “One Love” Win over UMass Dartmouth

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's freshman goalie Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) stopped a career-high 20 shots on net to help the Lancers to a 10-6 "One Love" game win over the visiting UMass Dartmouth Corsairs Tuesday evening.

1ST HALF

Worcester State took the first lead of the game six minutes in on a tally from Kaylee Krajewski (Holyoke, Mass.). Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.) scored the next for the Blue and Gold, and then she and Krajewski connected on the next goal for a 3-0 advantage with 16 minutes remaining in the first half. Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.) broke through on a dish from Julia DiPillo (Medway, Mass.) moments later to put the Corsairs on the board. Worcester State went on another 3-0 run on counts from Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, Mass.) and Abby Magnuson (Ellington, Conn.), but DiPillo would make the score 6-2 with a goal just over a minute to go in the half. Worcester State's O'Brien turned away 10 UMass Dartmouth shots in the first period.

 

2ND HALF

Worcester State's Mackenzie Little (Marlborough, Mass.) started the scoring in the second half. Kish would respond for the Corsaris to put the Lancers' lead back at four. Little scored again on a free position shot, and then she assisted Vecchiarelli on the next goal to give Worcester State a 6-goal advantage. UMass Dartmouth would finish the game with a 3-1 run on goals from Gabby Giangrande (Westbrook, Conn.), Sam Muir (Sturbridge, Mass.) and Kish, but would come up short for a final score of 10-6 in favor of the Lancers. O'Brien, once again, stopped 10 shots in the second frame to preserve the win.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • UMass Dartmouth outshot Worcester State 39-23, but O'Brien was phenomenal in goal as she stopped a career-high 20 shots in the 60-mintue performance.
  • Worcester State's Vecchiarelli led the Blue and Gold with three goals and one assist while also picking up two ground balls.
  • Krajewski, Little, and Magnuson each had two goals apiece in the win.
  • Laruen Arbec (Fairhaven, Mass.) caused a game-high four turnovers and also collected three ground balls, while Little led in the draw control category with five.
  • The Corsairs' offense was led by Kish who had three goals. DiPillo also collected three points on one goal and two assists.
  • UMass Dartmouth's Brooke Martel (Haverhill, Mass.) registered a game-high seven ground balls, while Raquel Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) led the Corsairs in draws with five.
  • Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) suffered her fourth loss of the season in net, as she made six saves on the evening.
  • UMass Dartmouth held the advantage in ground balls (34-21), draws (10-8), and caused turnovers (10-9).
  • Worcester State converted 4-of-9 (44.4%) free position shots, while UMass Dartmouth went 1-for-16 (6.3%).

 

UP NEXT

Worcester State heads to Bridgewater to face MASCAC opponent, Bridgewater State, on Saturday (Apr. 14). UMass Dartmouth is also on the road and will head to Keene State for a 1 p.m. Little East matchup.

 

ABOUT "ONE LOVE"

The One Love Foundation was founded in 2010 to honor Yeardley Love, a women's lacrosse student-athlete at the University of Virginia who was a victim of relationship violence. The Foundation was established in 2010 to ensure everyone understand the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy relationship.

 

The Lancers hosted their "One Love" game tonight, and will be hosting a 5K supporting the foundation on Sunday, April 22 at Worcester State. Registration for the event is available ONLINE.
