Northhampthon, MA --- Junior Briana Wise (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) captured individual titles in the 60 meters (7.78) and 200 (25.18) meters to help lead Worcester State to sixth place at the Division III New England Championships held at Smith College.

The Lancers tallied their highest-ever point total with 53 points besting their previous school mark of 44 that was set during the 1995-96 squad when they placed fourth as a team.

Wise improved her NCAA Division III time with school record in the 60 tying for the sixth-best mark nationally while she would also help the 4x200 meter squad that was comprised of Wise, senior Sarah Rafferty (Uxbridge, MA) and freshman teammates Liz Bodensieck (Raynham, MA) and Brittany Hodgerney (Leicester, MA) place second (1:44.39) for a new school record, just .088 away from the top spot.

Sophomore Christy Deininger (North Attleboro, MA) placed first in the 60 meter hurdles (9.05) and also scorched the track to establish a new school mark in the trials with a time of 8.94 as she moves up in the NCAA Division III standings to tie for ninth. Deininger also finished in second place in the 60 – just behind Wise – posting a time of 7.81, to tie for the 13th best spot in the nation. 

Both the 4x400 meter relay team and the distance medley relay squad set new program standards as they each finished in sixth place for All-New England accolades

Hodgerney and sophomore Megan Taylor (Danvers, MA) along with first-year teammates Kim West (Harvard, MA) and Alexandria McMahon (E. Longmeadow, MA) clocked 4:04.95 in the 4x400.

The 4000 meter relay of sophomore classmate Kelsey Cartwright (Bridgewater, MA), Alison Hickey (Easton, MA) and Ali Barrett (Hingham, MA) and freshman Kaitlyn Haselton (Attleboro, MA) notched a solid time of 13:05.38.

Freshman Amanda Caldarone (Danvers, MA) finished in eighth in the long jump (5.18m/17-00) for All-New England honors and third-year Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA) placed in 13th in the 5,000 for a school-record time of 18:28.30. 

Other times for Worcester State included Taylor who timed 1:39.72 for ninth place, which was 34 seconds off from All-New England laurels as Rafferty and Bodensieck were in 12th (8.10) and 13th (8.10), respectively in the 60. The pair were also 12th (26.84) and 13th (26.90) in the 200 as well.

Caladarone was 13th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.54) while sophomore Cathy Chude (Marlboro, MA) and freshman Therese Morss (Marion, MA) were 14th (9.69) and 16th (9.74), respectively. Haselton notched 21st in the 400 (1:03.89) as McMahon was 25th with a time of 10.11.

The 4x800 relay squad of Donohue, Cartwright, Barrett and Hickey placed 16th (10:51.51) and the field was paced by sophomore Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, ME) who was 18th in the shot put (10.85m/35-07.25). Freshman Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) also had a toss of 22nd in the shot put while sophomore Marlene Christenson (Danvers, MA) tacked on 24th in the weight throw (11.94m/39-02.25).

Morss was also 18th in the long jump (4.88m/16-00.25) and 22nd in the triple jump (10.17m/34-04.50) as McMahon was 19th in the long jump (4.87m/15-11.75). First-year Shannon Trybus (Bondsville, MA) recorded 27th in the weight throw (11.32m/37-01.75).

Next week select Lancers will compete at the Open New England Championships held at Boston University.
