Women's Volleyball Posts 3-1 Win Over Newbury

 

Worcester, MA  --- Junior Vicki O'Brien (Canton,MA) tallied a game-best 19 digs while sophomore Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) set down a match-high 14 kills as they both helped lead Worcester State to a 3-0 triumph over Newbury in non-conference volleyball action this evening.

The Nighthawks (5-6) took the opening set by a score of 26-24 before the Lancers (7-5) won the next three to clinch the match, 25-11, 25-17 and 25-21.

Jasper did her damage with a stellar .423 hitting percentage (14-3-26) and junior Megan Brown (Darmouth, MA) almost had a near near double double with nine kills and nine digs.

Sophomore Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) handed out 29 assists and freshman Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, MA) also added 14 digs. Senior Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) chipped in with seven kills and seven digs for WSU.

Second-year Sydney Fish (Kalamazoo, MI) had a solid night with a double-double for 13 kills and 11 digs to go with a pair of solo blocks.

Junior Jessy Touron (Brockton, MA) notched 12 digs and eight kills as senior Sara Hannah (Center Moriches, NY) had a team-high 13 digs. Fourth-year Sarah Young (Waterloo, NY) put up 22 assists while Touron and freshman Taylor Doolittle (Barneveld, NY) combined for five block assists.

The Lancers will play at Salem State on Saturday at 12 PM before they take on Daniel Webster at 2 PM in Salem.

Newbury heads to the MIT Invitational this weekend. The Nighthawks play in the evening against Tufts in the opening round at 4 and Smith at 6 o'clock with all matches scheduled to be played in Medford, MA.
