Worcester, MA- After an exciting 1-1 opening weekend for the Lancers, the Volleyball team returns to assistant Coach Amari King's old coaching grounds in a battle with Regis College. Last season, the Pride took the Lancers down in three, but this year, Worcester State is ready to serve up the win.
Final:
Worcester State: 2
Regis: 3
(16-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-16, 15-12)
How it Happened:
Worcester State would go down nine points early in the opening set of action and would fight to regain ground midway through cutting the score to 16-21. Although Worcester had an impressive rally with a run of five straight points on the serve of junior Megan Bardis (Sterling, MA), the Pride would close for the 16-25 victory.
The second set allowed Worcester to reclaim some momentum, opening the action on a 6-2 run. Regis would rally to the occasion, tying the set up at 11-11 forcing the teams to go back and forth through the mid range of the set. A late surge by the Pride would claim the hard fought 18-25 second set victory.
Worcester though, has already in their short season, been no stranger to fighting to extend the match. The third set would continue the back and forth sway of the late set until the Lancers went on a 7-3 run to jump out to a 23-18 lead. Regis would put in one last kick for the win, but an attacking error would put the ball back in Worcester's hand and set up the set victory off the kill of junior Kate Stedronsky (Sea Girt, NJ) from senior Angela Colonis (Waterford, CT).
The Fourth set would see the Lancers take an early lead due to a couple of quick set plays off the left hand side. Regis would be forced to call a timeout after being down 3 points. With the score of the set being 12-9 the Lancers would concede a point after their early success. Regis would lose this set after the Lancers would go on two 5 point runs to tie up the game 2-2 on sets.
The fifth and final set of the day would see Regis open up with the first points but the Lancers would go on a five point run. With one five set match under their belt in the last three days, Worcester was going to look to past experiences as they road back and forth fifth set, but with a game settled at 12-13, Regis would sneak away with the two points needed in the fifth set stalling the Lancers comeback hopes in their hard fought match.
Junior Cassidy D'Esposito (Medford, NY) led the team with 13 kills while Colonis would end the night with 19 assists and 21 digs in the five set thriller.
What's Next:
The Lancers (1-2, 0-0) jump right back into action on Thursday when they journey to Framingham State for a non-conference meeting with the Rams at 6pm.
