Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Volleyball team (2-2, 0-0) looks to continue their winning ways this afternoon with a trip to Wellesley College for a single match Saturday. Worcester has been on a strong start this season claiming two matches while dropping a five setter and four setter, setting the team up to withstand the pressures of a potential back and forth match this season.
Final
Worcester State :0
Wellesley: 3
How it Happened:
Wellesley got off to a hot start after being down 3-1 early in the first set, going on a 10-1 run to jump ahead 11-5 early. Worcester State would attempt to close the deficit but the Blues were not willing to give an inch, pushing the lead to 21-10 quickly. A service cycle by junior Kaitlin Cueva (Tewksbury, MA) would see the Lancers close the gap down to seven but ultimately Wellesley would take the opening set 25-16.
Worcester State was unable to slow the Wellesley momentum in the second going down 18-4 early. A timeout by the Lancers hoped to calm the court but Wellesley would return with a five a point run to take the second set 25-4.
Worcester State would come out battling in the third set, keeping pace with the Blues for a majority of the set before jumping to their own 21-15 lead. A Wellesley timeout though would change the course as they went on a 10-2 run to close out the final set 25-22 and claim the match over Worcester.
First year Kaitlyn Anthony (Gastonia, NC) would lead the team with eight digs while junior Cassidy D'Esposito (Medford, NY) would have five kills on the afternoon alongside two block assists to partner with fellow junior Kate Stedronsky's (Sea Girt, NJ) three for the Lancers.
What's Next:
The Blue and Gold (2-3, 1-0) are home on Tuesday at 7pm for their first home match of the season as they welcome UMass-Dartmouth to Brissette Court.
