Indoor Track & Field Begins Season at UMass Boston Open

BOSTON, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams impressed on Saturday as they kicked off their seasons at the Seventh Annual UMass Boston Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Senior Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) led a strong showing by the Worcester State men on the day with a pair of top-three finishes in throwing events. Vieira won the weight throw with a distance of 17.97 meters, and placed third with a heave of 14.45 meters in the shot put. Senior Anthony Christo (Peabody, Mass.) finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 15.74 meters.

Three Lancers reached the final of the men's 60-meter hurdle, led by freshman Andre Luciano (Milford, Mass.), who finished third with a time of 8.76 seconds. Sophomore Abdulrazak Frederick (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished fifth (8.84), while freshman Charles Bray (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was seventh (9.04).

A quartet of distance runners finished in the top seven spots in their respective races, led by a third place finish (8:55.73) from freshman Patrick Carleton (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the 3000 meter run. Finishing fifth in the same event with a time of 9:00.40 was freshman Drew Fottler (Chelmsford, Mass.). In the 1000 meter run, senior Joe Grider (Hopedale, Mass.) finished sixth with a time of 2:42.64, while freshman Colin Brennan (Newbury, Mass.) finished seventh with a time of 2:43.31.

Two Lancers finished atop the podium in their respective events on the women's side. Senior Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) was the victor in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:14.95, while sophomore Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) won the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.06. Mensah also finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.97, and seventh in the 200 meter with a time of 26.86.

MASCAC women's cross country Runner of the Year Elisabeth Olson (Wilmington, Mass.) started off her track season strong with a fourth place finish in the mile run. She crossed the finish line in 5:24.71. Sophomore Amanda Turner (Windham, Maine) led the Lancers with a sixth place finish in the 400 meter run, crossing the line with a time of 1:04.21.

Sophomore Kyra Siano (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Courtney Guay (Londonderry, N.H.) each had impressive showings in the 800 meter run. Siano finished in fifth with a time of 2:30.20, while Guay was seventh with a run of 2:32.62.

The Lancers will be off until after the New Year, competing on January 12 at the Tufts Invitational in Medford, Mass.
