Lancers Do DOuble Duty at BC and Coast Guard Meets in Friday Challenge

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Indoor Track and Field team had a split day today with three athletes heading to the Boston College Open Meet at the New Balance Track in Boston while the rest of the squad travelled down to the Coast Guard Academy for a rare friday afternoon meet.

 

Sophomores Ciara Adu-Addo (Worcester, MA) and Alexis Strong (Southington, CT) competed in the 60m at the BC Open where Adu-Addo claimed 16th in a highly competitive field with a time of 8.14 while Strong took home 23rd with a time of 8.34. In the 400m dash in Boston, senior Carly Gilson (Grafton, MA) would cross in a time of 64.17 for 27th in the event. 

 

The remainder of the squad traveled to Coast Guard for an evening of competition. Leading the Lancers at Coast Guard was junior Bridget O'Malley (Leominster, MA) who finished in third in the 800m at 2:35.61 to get the track side of the day off to a fast start. Joining O'Malley in the 800 was fellow juniors Leah Berg (Worcester, MA) in 11th with a time of 2:48.66, and Claudia Symonick (Auburn, MA) in 13th at 3:01.69. Symonick would just edge out first year Cassandra Dirsa (Bolton, MA) but just under a second who crossed in 14th at 3:02.47. Dirsa and Symonick would also hit the track in the mile with Dirsa claiming 15th with a time of 6:28.97 while Symonick ended in 16th just on the heels of Dirsa at 6:29.68. Junior Jillian McMenemy (Westborough, MA) would wrap up the mile contingent in 18th with a 6:57.75 time. Running a quarter of the distance was fellow junior Aubrey Tunnera (Marlborough, MA) who finished her race in the 400m in 18th at 76.23.

 

As the race got longer, the Lancers only rose to the challenge as first year Samantha Edwards (East Longmeadow, MA) claimed 5th in the 3,000m at 12:26.33 while junior Kelsey Gendreau (Seekonk, MA) claimed 4th in the 5,000m at finish of 20:41.48.

 

On the sprints side of the track team, sophomore Lauren Condike (East Longmeadow, MA) would spring and jump her way to 6th in the 55m hurdles at a time of 9.82. In the 200m first year Emily Boswell (Lakeville, MA) would claim 18th at a time of 29.36. Fellow first year Arianna Farrell (Wilmington, MA) would claim 28th at a time of 31.04 while sophomore Mia Guinto (West Boylston, MA) would take 31st at a time of 31.64. In the 4x400m Bodwell, Berg, sophomore Meghan Driscoll (Mansfield, MA) and O'Malley would claim 2nd to wrap up the night on the track with a time of 4:53.19.

 

On the field side, the throwing pit had marked success led by sophomore Jadah Stokes (Chicopee, MA) in both the shot put and weight throw. Stokes claimed 2nd in the shot with an 11.95m mark and third in the weight throw with a 14.04m measurement. Joining Stokes in the double battle was graduate student Sthanisha Moreau (Taunton, MA), sophomore Luana Grau-Moura (Marlborough, MA) and first year Charlotte Collins (Weymouth, MA). Moreau would claim 8th in the shot put with a 10.06m and 9th in the weight on 11.87m. Grau-Moura would claim 19th in shot put with 8.67m and 20th in the weight throw after reaching 9.89m. Rounding out the double pit group was Collins who claimed 14th in the weight throw on a 10.64m mark and 21st in the shot put at 8.49m. First year Angela Crognalo-Torrez (Walpole, MA) would also compete in the shot put, claiming 17th with a 8.83m mark while senior Arianna Constant (Leominster, MA) claimed 18th in the weight throw at 9.92m. 

 

In the lone jump unit at Coast Guard sophomore Lauren Condike (East Longmeadow, MA) would take home 5th at a 1.45m leap just ahead of first year Alexandria LaPointe (Fall River, MA) in 6th at 1.40m.

 

Worcester State will return to the competition circuit next Sunday afternoon when they compete at the MASCAC Indoor Championships.
