Worcester MA- Worcester State hosted the Worcester City Tournament with the first game against Clark University to kick off a doubleheader weekend.
Worcester State got off to a fast start and forced an early Clark timeout, which proved to be useful as Clark was able to get back into the game and closed the Worcester State lead to only 2 points at the end of the first quarter.
The Lancers came out firing in the second quarter led by first year Lena Waldron (Quincy, Mass) as she finished the half with 12 points along with a great defensive effort by the Lancers as a team. Jaqueline Faulise led the way for Clark 14 points in the first half of play, but it was Worcester State who led at half time, 40-32 in a genuine team effort on the court
Clark came out on a mission at the beginning of the third quarter and cut the lead from 8 points to 2 but Worcester State was able to stop the Clark run and maintain their lead throughout the third quarter and took the lead into the fourth quarter of play.
Waldron led the Lancers with 16 points and eight rebounds on the night while senior Nyah Thomas (Attleboro, MA) recorded eight assists.
It was in the fourth quarter that Clark was finally able to rally and take the lead with a stellar defensive effort, shutting down the Lancers offense, and sealing the win by a score of 72-64, led by 18 points , which included 5 threes by Kumi Tamura (Whittier,CA). Worcester State falls to 0-2,0-0, and will take on the loser of Anna/WPI at 5pm tomorrow.
